TWENTY-ONE

“We need to plan,” Gan said. “Two days will be tight, but we can—”

“Tight?” I asked, raising my voice as the sensation of the Unholy in the Park converging on the rift threatened to overwhelm my senses. “It’s not a few Unholy, Gan. This is the Unholy-- as in all of the Unholy! What are we going to do in two days, besides prepare to die?”

“You’re not thinking this through,” he said. “There are other factors at play here.”

“Not thinking it through?” I asked. “What am I missing about our impending death?”

“Do you really think Regional is going to let you face off against Chimera in a Rite of Combat?”

“What are you talking about?” I asked. “Regional and the Hunters fight the Unholy. This would help them.”

“No, Blue,” Gan said, shaking his head. “Regional needs the Unholy.Without the presence of the Unholy—”

“They no longer serve a purpose.”

“Exactly,” he replied. “Defeating Chimera means you control the Unholy. They can’t allow the Jade Demon to control an army of Unholy.”

“They’re going to try and stop me, aren’t they?”

“Once they realize what is happening, the Hunters will be sent into the Park.”

“The Class Ones?”

“The Hunters, Blue,” Gan said. “All of the Hunters. They can’t let you succeed. They can’t even let you attempt to face Chimera.”

“About Regional,” I said, “the mole is—”

“Rafael,” Gan finished, his voice so filled with barely contained rage that I took a step back. “I know.”

“You knew?” I asked surprised. “How long?”

“How long did I know, or how long has he been a mole?”

“Both?”

“I blinded myself to the possibility,” he said. “I thought…Never mind what I thought.” He looked away for a few moments. “He was a brother to me, once. Now, we need to have one final conversation.”

“We have company,” I said, turning suddenly at the new energy signature. “Near the entrance now. Masked.”

“Company?” Gan said. “Who would be insane enough to enter the Park at night?”

I gave him a look.

“I mean besides us,” he answered, looking toward the entrance I had used. “Did you say the entrance? I don’t sense anyone.”

I felt Cade enter the Park and approach our location. Further in, I could sense Wake and Jas, taking cover in the entrance to a cave network. Whatever Finis had done, had increased the strength of my abilities.

“Look again,” I said. “It’s Cade.”

I focused, reaching out and pinpointing where Wake and Jas were hiding. Gan closed his eyes and focused, opening them again suddenly, surprise on his features.

“You sensed him from that distance?”

I nodded.

“Actually, I sensed him a little further out, but I wasn’t sure,” I said. “Whatever Finis did, it must have worked. My senses are on overload.”

“We need to determine what your limits are now,” Gan said. “You can’t face Chimera without knowing your new parameters.”

“Or the key to the artifact,” I added. “Without that, facing Chimera is suicide.”

“There is that,” Gan said. “Calisto will get the key. She can be quite relentless when she wants to be. I almost feel sorry for Fuma.”

“Do you think he will give it to her?”

“Of his own free will? Unlikely.
